Happy Birthday, Trayvon Martin!
You would have been 23
Glowing with Black Boy Joy,
Having a picnic with your family by the trees.
You should be celebrating,
With ice cream and cake
Instead our eyes are stained with tears,
And those tears flow like a river,
As our hearts break.
You just wanted to go to the store,
To buy your brother some goodies
Yet they label you as a thug,
Or, “the black kid in the hoodie.”
Please tell me, how the hell could it be,
That your lost your life,
And that vile beast who killed you,
Was set free?
Trayvon, you were not just a black kid in a hoodie,
Or a thug
You was handsome and worthy,
Who had a bright future, up in the stars above.
It’s sometimes tough for us black warriors,
When injustice keeps us from being able to get by
However, we still fight everyday for you Trayvon,
As you, Sandra Bland, Philando Castile and others couldn’t live your full lives.
We love you Trayvon Martin,
From the tenderness of our hearts, to the soles of our feet,
You should have celebrated your birthday,
You should have been 23.
